Never perform exercises in full spinal flexion.

 
Repetitive flexion of the lumbar spine, such as when performing sit ups or crunches, contributes to degeneration of the lumbar discs and significantly raises the risk of disc herniation.

  rspeakman   Not to mention, there a plenty of ab exercises that don't require full spinal flexion that provide maximum results: bicycle crunches, leg raises, hanging leg raises. There's just no reason for full
